What is your therapeutic orientation?
The way I see it, nearly every school of thought in psychology has contributed something valuable, and not one has all the answers. For that reason, I do not run each client through my way of doing therapy. My approach varies a lot from one individual to another, drawing from many therapeutic traditions. I know that what works for one person may not work for another, and what works now may not work later. Before using any approach, we need to investigate thoroughly all the ways that you have already tried to achieve your goals so that we can eliminate what has notworked for you and build on what has worked. I try to build on your strengths and strengthen your weaknesses. More important than my therapeutic orientation is that you feel I have a compassionate understanding of you and your issues.
You can read about methods I have studied in the Background section. My favorite techniques (for those of you who speak psycho-jargon) belong to the general psychodynamic approach: inner child work, Internal Family Systems Therapy (work with internal parts), Depth-Oriented Brief Therapy (work with subconscious beliefs), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR, primarily used for trauma), gestalt therapy, bioenergetic therapy, and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). My approach is an integration of everything I have learned. Each holds a piece of the puzzle and is invaluable at times.
Mindfulness is a core skill for each of these approaches, and I encourage clients to build a daily practice of mindfulness outside the sessions. I see the psyche as made up of numerous parts or ego-selves that must be recognized by and integrated with the Essential Self. In addition, with most clients, I do some training in breathing, grounding, and centering.
